Canicross Midlands – Member Code of Conduct

1. Purpose

This Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected from all members of Canicross Midlands. It ensures that club activities remain safe, inclusive, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone involved in sleddog sports.

All members agree to follow this Code as a condition of membership.

 

2. General Behaviour

Members must:

  • Treat all participants, volunteers, officials, sponsors, vendors and spectators with respect and courtesy

  • Behave in a way that reflects positively on the club and the wider sleddog‑sport community

  • Avoid behaviour that could be considered abusive, discriminatory, intimidating, or offensive

  • Follow all club policies, including Safeguarding and Complaints

  • Respect decisions made by run leaders, officials, and event organisers

 

3. Respect for Dogs

Members must:

  • Prioritise the welfare, safety, and comfort of their dogs at all times

  • Use only equipment that is safe, appropriate, and fits correctly

  • Train and race dogs in a humane, positive, and welfare‑focused manner

  • Never use harsh handling, punishment, or any form of abuse

  • Ensure dogs are fit, healthy, and appropriately conditioned for activity

  • Follow all BSSF and club rules regarding dog welfare, temperature limits, and trail safety

 

4. Safety and Responsibility

Members must:

  • Follow instructions from run leaders and event officials

  • Maintain control of their dog(s) at all times

  • Use appropriate canicross, bikejor, or scooter equipment

  • Ensure their dog is kept on lead unless explicitly instructed otherwise

  • Respect trail etiquette, including overtaking protocols and safe passing

  • Report hazards, injuries, or incidents promptly to a run leader or committee member

 

5. Inclusivity and Community

Members must:

  • Help create a welcoming and supportive environment for newcomers

  • Avoid behaviour that excludes, belittles, or undermines others

  • Celebrate the achievements of all participants, regardless of ability or experience

  • Promote a culture of encouragement, fairness, and sportsmanship

 

6. Training Sessions and Events

Members must:

  • Arrive on time and prepared for sessions

  • Ensure their dog has appropriate rest, hydration, and warm‑up time

  • Respect the pace and ability of the group

  • Follow all safety briefings and route instructions

  • Avoid bringing dogs that are unwell, injured, or aggressive

  • Clean up after their dog and dispose of waste responsibly

 

7. Social Media and Online Conduct

Members must:

  • Use social media responsibly when representing the club

  • Avoid posting content that is harmful, discriminatory, or inflammatory

  • Not share confidential or sensitive information about other members

  • Refrain from online bullying, harassment, or negative commentary about individuals or clubs

 

8. Safeguarding Responsibilities

Members must:

  • Act in the best interests of children, young people, and adults at risk

  • Report safeguarding concerns promptly to the Club Welfare Officer

  • Avoid any behaviour that could be misinterpreted as inappropriate or unsafe

  • Respect boundaries and maintain appropriate relationships with junior members

 

9. Compliance and Accountability

Members understand that:

  • Breaches of this Code may result in action under the club’s Complaints Policy

  • Serious breaches may be referred to the BSSF or relevant authorities

  • The club may take proportionate action to protect the safety and wellbeing of members and dogs

 

10. Commitment

By joining Canicross Midlands, members agree to:

  • Uphold this Code of Conduct

  • Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive environment

  • Represent the club with integrity and respect
